Rashi numbers 1 to 12

Memorize the only number key you need to decode a standard North Indian chart.

The twelve Rashis always remain in the same zodiac order: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. In charts they are commonly abbreviated to the numbers 1 through 12 in exactly that order.

Therefore 1 never means “first house” by itself; it means Aries (Mesha). 2 means Taurus (Vrishabha), 3 Gemini (Mithuna), 4 Cancer (Karka), 5 Leo (Simha), 6 Virgo (Kanya), 7 Libra (Tula), 8 Scorpio (Vrishchika), 9 Sagittarius (Dhanu), 10 Capricorn (Makara), 11 Aquarius (Kumbha), 12 Pisces (Meena).

The house is determined separately from the compartment position. That means the same Rashi number can appear in different houses in different people’s charts because the Ascendant changes.

You do not need to memorize every house-sign combination. Memorize only the Rashi number sequence. Once you know the Lagna number, the remaining signs follow naturally around the chart.

A useful practice is to stop reading sign names for a few minutes and decode only numbers: 4 → Cancer, 8 → Scorpio, 11 → Aquarius, 12 → Pisces. The conversion soon becomes automatic.
